The Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Madeira) is a must visit in Funchal, Madeira for anyone who loves nature and color! This attraction is easy to get to and fit into your schedule. Whether you’re staying a week in Funchal or just passing through, I recommend adding the Madeira Botanical Garden to your itinerary.
This peaceful experience can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on how much you want to explore. You’ll see not only amazing foliage in the garden itself, but stunning views of Funchal and the ocean from your viewpoint up on the hill. There’s even a café to sit and relax as part of your visit.

What to See in the Madeira Botanical Garden
The Madeira Botanical Garden has a wide array of flowers and foliage to view and walk through. There’s trees in the arboretum, endangered species, and according to Visit Madeira, more than 2000 plants from all continents!
The creative gardens at the center of Madeira Botanical Garden are a must-see. Deep purple-red and bright yellow-green plants are grown and shaped in beautiful patterns that truly appear as a natural work of art. Photos of these gardens are what drew me to visit the Madeira Botanical Garden in the first place.

Your ticket to the Madeira Botanical Garden gives you not only access to the main gardens and the natural art I’ve mentioned, but to the Natural History Museum and any temporary exhibits that are in place during the time of your visit. For any nature lovers out there, it’s well worth the ticket price for everything you can see- including the amazing views of the ocean, Funchal, and the valley! The gardens even host occasional educational programs and guided tours if you are looking to add something else to your schedule.
Best Time to Visit the Madeira Botanical Garden
The best time to visit the garden is most certainly in the spring! In April and May, the flowers are in full bloom on the island and the botanical garden will be showing off for its visitors. Every section of the garden will have flora and foliage bursting with life. There is even an annual spring Madeira Flower Festival!
Tourists most often come in the summer months, making their experiences a little more crowded. Fall and winter are best for quiet visits to the garden. While you will sill enjoy Madeira’s moderate climate that time of year, the garden doesn’t provide quite as much color and is subject to higher rainfall.
Visitor Information for the Madeira Botanical Garden (as of September 2026)
Hours
-Visiting hours are daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
-The only exception is when the garden is closed on Christmas Day.
-Last ticket is sold at 5:30pm if you are trying to squeeze in a quick visit.
Visiting Time
-Expect 1-3 hours for your visit depending on how much you wish to see and learn.
-Tickets expire the same day they are purchased (good for a single visit).
Prices
-Entrance is 10 euros for any visitor over 12 years old
-Entrance is 3 euros for any visitors ages 6-12
-Kids under 6 are able to visit for free
Getting to the Madeira Botanical Garden
Don’t forget to book your flight to Madeira early for the best deals! I highly recommend a day layover in Lisbon, Portugal on either end to explore the city and get some rest before and after your island adventure!
The Madeira Botanical Garden is about 1.5 miles (about 2.5km) from the center of Funchal. Of course this can be more or less depending on where you are staying. There are a few ways to reach the gardens from the city:
Cable Car from Monte
A popular option for tourists wanting to see the Madeira Botanical Garden is to take the cable car from further up the hill in Monte and come down for a few hours for their visit. You can take a round trip back to Monte if that is where you are staying and even take a separate cable car from Monte to downtown Funchal for further exploration. The trip between Monte and the Botanical Garden lasts around 9 minutes one way.
The cable car runs 9:00am-5:00pm every day with last boarding 10 minutes before they close. You can book your ticket up to a year in advance though it’s not necessary to show up with a pre-booked ticket. Since the cable car runs all year long (except for Christmas Day), it’s easy to fit it into your schedule while in the Funchal area!
Cable Car Pricing
Prices (and lots of great additional info!) can be found on the official cable car website but are presented here as well (as of September 2026). For adults, one way trips are 11 euros and round trips are 16 euros. For kids ages 7-14, one way trips are 6 euros and round trips are 9 euros. Kids under 7 ride free! There are additional prices if you want to combine entrance to the Madeira Botanical Garden into your trip (about 8 euros more for adults and 3 euros more for kids).
The Botanical Garden Cable Car (Teleférico Jardim Botânico) offers a 10% discount for those that book their trip online. Click here to visit the official website for booking your cable car ticket. There is also a physical office in downtown Funchal at Avenida do Mar if you are in the city and looking to book tickets. But of course you can book at the Botanical Garden Station and Monte Station too.

***Don’t forget to check the cable car schedule if you are interested in this option. There are varying times that the cable car can be down for maintenance or other issues.
Rental Car
For those traveling the island on their own time, you may have rented your own car after landing in Madeira. If you haven’t booked your rental yet, click here to browse options!
This gives you flexibility to visit the gardens even if you aren’t staying directly in Funchal. It is easy to drive to the Madeira Botanical Garden and there is even free parking outside the garden. If you do wish to drive from Funchal, the drive takes about 10 minutes.
Note you can drive and park at the Botanical Garden Cable Car Station and take a cable car up to visit Monte as well or you can park at the Monte Cable Car Station (about 15 minutes from Funchal) and take the cable car down for your visit to the garden. Bus
Check out the Madeira bus schedule to learn how to travel from Funchal to the Madeira Botanical Garden via local transportation. This link will bring you to the Madeira bus website. However, note the website recommends the app for a more user friendly interface and full view of the timetables.
You can also check out the official Horários do Funchal website, using their Travel section to learn about schedules and bus routes that will bring you to the garden.
Taxi
A simple option for many Funchal visitors or those near the city is to call a taxi to bring you straight to the Madeira Botanical Garden. Taxis can be hailed in downtown Funchal or you can hire a private taxi to ensure your arrangements work with your schedule.
Visit Madeira has a portal already set up for booking a taxi online and has phone numbers for local vetted taxi services.
Walking
You can of course walk up to the Madeira Botanical Garden if you don’t have a car or want to exercise your legs for the day. It is simple enough to get to even from downtown Funchal, but you are looking at a steep walk and depending on where you’re staying this could take 45 minutes to over an hour. Be aware of the climb you’ll be doing, especially on a hot day!
Be mindful of the narrow streets, passing cars, and of course understand that you’ll have to walk back down unless you call a taxi.

Tours to Pair with the Madeira Botanical Garden
The last way to get to the Madeira Botanical Garden is through a paid tour! These tours can pick you up at various locations (read the tour details) and bring you straight to the garden. Or, more often, tours may visit multiple activities with the Madeira Botanical Garden being just one stop in a busy fun-filled day!
Tours are a fantastic option for individuals or groups that want to take all the guesswork out of the experience. You don’t have to worry about directions except for getting to your pickup location. Often tour prices include the entrance fee to the Madeira Botanical Garden but be sure to check the details of your specific tour!
